BIDEN INCREASES SNAP BENEFITS, BUT NOT FOR ALL| BY P. ANNE BATTISTE | AUGUST 16, 2021

(GULFPORT, MS) | The Biden administration is expected to announce an increase of SNAP benefits on today for qualifying families. According to the Associated Press, “[T]he levels of food stamp assistance available to needy families [is] the largest single increase in the program’s history.”

While the 25% increase takes effect in October 2021 for SNAP recipients, food insecurities experienced by America’s most vulnerable populations remain because their 'unearned' income actually barrs them from qualifying for even one dollar in SNAP benefits.

In October 2020, a representative with Mississippi’s Department of Human Services said, “If that same income were 'earned,' those on fixed incomes would qualify for SNAP.” The Mississippi representative also added the situation materialized when “[t]he Trump administration lowered income levels for households with 'unearned' incomes this year.”

From that point onward, too many elderly persons receiving social security retirement loss their SNAP benefits and disabled individuals receiving social security disability checks were, too, cut off of the SNAP program upon recertifying after October 2020.
